As the seniors are reaching their final days here at SPHS, they reflect on their previous years and how they could have done it differently. The Eagle Eye Newspaper has surveyed 52 seniors, and asked them “what advice would you give to your freshman self?” This is what they said.
A handful of seniors suggested that freshmen should join any sport or club that intrigues them. Although new experiences can be nerve-racking at first, many seniors regret being too scared to join at. One of the greatest benefits of joining clubs or sports is finding students who share your similar interests. Meeting people who have similar passions can create life-long friendships, and those bonds are what make the four years at SPHS awesome.
Juliana McCormack is a senior here at San Pasqual, as well as the Vice President and Editor in Chief for the Eagle Eye Newspaper. She shares what she should have done differently for her freshman year, and advice for anyone else on their path to graduation. “My best piece of advice is to surround yourself with the people who will support you through your hardships and congratulate you on your accomplishments.”
Several seniors also urged freshmen to create and maintain a positive mindset, even if the highschool path gets difficult. A mindset filled with hope and determination can motivate students for the future ahead.
Jaden Carrillo asserts, “Don’t give up, everything finds its way in the end, a new road of opportunity awaits for you. Use that faithful optimism when things feel too low.”
A variety of students also warn freshmen of the growing epidemic of “procrastination” that usually comes during the middle of the year. Leaving seniors advise students to stay disciplined and consistent with their academics, and try not to fall behind.
Nadia Ramirez Barcenas claims, “Freshman year is the most important. It sets the foundation for the following years, so try your best to pass all your classes. Think positive too.”
As the end of the school year approaches, seniors experience the epiphany of realizing how quickly time flies. With future pathways in the palm of their hands, it is their decision to choose how to spend the rest of their lives. Several seniors wished they could have planned ahead and prepared what they want to do in the future. Other seniors wished they could have appreciated their time at SPHS while it lasted.
Carlo Thoryk states, “Don’t take any of your time for granted, and try as hard as you can on everything. You never know what could hurt you down the line.”
As we give our goodbyes to the seniors leaving high school, we congratulate them for beginning a new chapter in their life. We give our final farewells and wish them luck in the real world.
