The average adult will binge watch up to “3 hours of television at a time,” said the US National Library of Medicine, who discusses the heightened occurrence of binge watching TV during Covid-19. Their study documented that over half of the adults interviewed would binge-watch their TV shows. What’s more alarming is that the largest majority of those interviewed had no clue how much data was being collected on them while streaming through their devices. To see first-hand if binge watching was as much of a problem at our school for teens as it was for adults, a San Pasqual High School student tells us about her experiences.

“I like watching The Mandalorian on Netflix. I binge watch occasionally, but if I watch for too long without having done anything else that day, it feels like time has passed me by, and the day feels wrong. I don’t like it much,” said Kaitie Engleman.

There is a lack of cognitive attention while binge watching shows. Ironically, the largest portion of the data collected on adults through interviews showed that they considered their binge watching habits to be bad for their psyche. The results of the survey show that a large portion of binge watchers want to change their time management.

It appears that the overarching majority of people who binge-watch know its negative effects whilst still trying to improve their lifestyle choices.
