This year’s San Pasqual High School boys soccer team is looking to take another step towards greater success this season. Head coach and San Pasqual alumni John Burson is excited about the new season and has high hopes for his team.

“Every year we have high expectations, win our league, and we always have aspirations to win CIF and we’re looking to win our first state title,” said Burson.

The team started this season off strong with a 4-0 home win vs. San Dieguito High School. Since the first game, the Eagles have posted a record of 3-1-2 (3 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws). In their last time out, the Eagles played a home game and drew 1-1 vs. Westview High School.

According to Burson, San Pasqual has built a consistent soccer program and they are striving to improve each year. In a preseason poll by MaxPreps.com, the Eagles came into the season ranked #9 out of all the Division 1 schools in San Diego County.

When seniors graduate from high school, the coaches are always looking for new talent that can carry the torch for the years to come. Coach Burson is eager to see his new crop of players make an impact on this year’s team.

“There are a lot of good players on the team. We’ve got a lot of returners coming back, but a good young player would be one of our sophomores, David Kotoyan,” said Burson. “He plays left-back; he’s an exciting player and I’m excited to see what he can do.”

In Kotoyan’s first game of the season, he tallied two assists in a 2-2 draw vs. Del Norte.

The Eagles look to be very well-rounded at all positions and hope this is their year to break out and make a run for the CIF Championship.
