Gavin Newton had recently signed a law on Sunday that requires later start times for all schools nationwide. The law states that by the year 2020 high schools can not start earlier than 8:30 and middle schools can not start earlier than 8:00 the only law that requires later start times will force many schools in San Diego to change their start times. Schools in San Diego County, like Sweetwater Union High School District and Grossmont Union High School District, start as early as 8 AM and some as early as 7 AM.

Jasmine Garcia says “I feel I would for sure be less tired if school started at 8:30, I would be far more energetic and focused on my school work because I usually wake up feeling very tired even though I went to bed early. I also know that some schools start around 8:30-9:00 and I know they are doing very well academically”.

This would probably help a lot of students who might not have to get up early. They won’t be late because they live far away, or are too tired when they have to get up at 6:50 and school starts at 7:30 that student will most likely be late. If this change were to be made it would make students better in school academic wise, and better for the students mentally, as they will get more sleep to stay focused.

Sleep helps you fuel your brain and your body. Caringforkids.cps.com says “Teens need sleep because their bodies and minds are growing quickly.” Scientific research claims that many teens do not get enough. On average, they need 8-10 hours of sleep every day.

All in all, this change can better help our students and improve and encourage them. The kids that go to San Pasqual High School can very much benefit from this change if it were to happen. Some students here often sleep most of the class period and miss notes, lectures, or work that needs to be done. If this change were to be made then there will be an improvement in students’ grades and help them mentally for school.
