Who is running this event?
World Skate, the ISF (International Skate Federation) and FIRS (Federal Of Roller Sport) has agreed to host this event and have been planning it for some time now. Many people wondered about skating being in the 2020 Olympics, but now it’s official; skateboarding will be in the Summer 2020 Olympics.
Skater Quotas
There will be 20 skaters in each competition. There can only be 3 people from each country on one team. If the 3 skaters are ranked higher than than others, then ranking doesn’t matter.
Age Limits/Requirements
There are no age limits for Olympic skateboarders. This means that anyone can be in the 2020 Olympics if they are willing to put in the effort toward the sport.
Will there Be Uniforms?
Skaters can wear anything they would like even if they are the clothes their sponsor has approved, the skateboard itself, or any extra accessories that need to be on the skateboard itself.
Famous Skateboarders Who Will Be in the 2020 Olympics
Leticia Bufoni
One of the female skaters, Leticia Bufoni is 26 and from Paulo, Brazil. She was named one of the most beautiful powerful women in international sports and it wasn’t without some push back. She grew up in São Paulo. Her passion was for skateboarding and she was often at odds with her father he wanted her passion to be anything but skateboarding. He often tried to steer her away from skateboarding and even went to the extent of smashing her board right in front of her. She will be competing and is preparing for the 2020 Olympics that will be in Tokyo, Japan.
Samarria Brevard
Another female skater is Samarria Brevard from Riverside California. She was one of the first African American females to make the podium at the X-Games back in 2017. This performance earned her a place on the Hoopla Skateboards team. She says she “Encourages women to keep pushing themselves in the sport.” She started skateboarding at the age of 13 with her brothers and cousins who also skated. She also will be competing and is preparing for the 2020 upcoming Olympic
Tony Hawk
Another skater is Tony Hawk. Everyone wants to see him compete in the 2020 Olympics. He says “I think it’s going to be great to see the new generation of skaters to be recognized on that level and to have the sort of opportunity that past generations never had.” But Hawk does have his doubt about the development and isn’t fully sure if he’ll participate in the sports event.
I think that the skateboarding being in the 2020 Olympics is a great opportunity for the future generation of skateboarders, and a great way to publicize their names. Mrs. Greer, a teacher at San Pasqual who is also head of the skateboarding club, says, “I think it’s a fantastic idea…and that any exposure is good exposure.” All in all, I think that skateboarding being in the 2020 Olympics is an amazing idea, and good opportunity for some of the students that go to San Pasqual High School because it gives them something or someone to look up to. Another great thing about this development is anyone who loves this sport and is a good skater could possibly be in the Olympics if they try their hardest.
