The 2020 Election and the Need for Nonpartisan Discussion

Different viewpoints in politics often cause rifts between people, but students should be able to voice their own opinions without getting hostile stares.

Different viewpoints in politics often cause rifts between people, but students should be able to voice their own opinions without getting hostile stares.

The most important event of the year is coming up; the 2020 presidential election. When it is time for seniors to make a change in their country, and for different viewpoints to divide between them, seniors don’t know who they’ll give their vote for in 2020.

An anonymous senior student sees both sides of the coin, but easily states their own viewpoint on today’s politics, saying that a new president will be a better change. But the question is, would it?

Many people say that Trump is a horrible person. This statement may seem understandable to some. The president often makes brash, and, as some people tend to think,  rude comments on both social media and in public speeches. This isn’t a valid excuse for division among the country.  After all, the First Amendment states that “freedom of speech” is a fundamental right to citizens. Every person has the right to state their own opinion and let their voices be heard.

“My mom always taught my sisters and I that two plus two equals four, but three plus one equals four,” the anonymous source said. “There are different ways to get to the same goal.”

This is how it should be. Young adults shouldn’t be raised by biased comments from close members of family or friends to change their opinion.

Nowadays, people simply hate the opposing side.  America was created from people who wanted to start over. People who believed in a new, more modern nation acting as one. But what state are we in?

“Our system is broken,” said Michael Shatto, AP Government teacher.

What is there not to agree with? Our system really is broken… broken to the point where hatred has a greater meaning than facts do, and this generation is doing nothing to prevent that.

It’s time for this generation to wake up. To see the damage we need to fix. We need to begin seeing both sides of the coin, and examining the different viewpoints.
